From Artichoke to Rhubarb- Vine to Hawthorn- The Complete Herbal provides the most comprehensive listings of herbs and their uses in existence.
First published over 350 years ago by herbalist and apothecary Nicholas Culpeper, this encyclopaedic guide had an extensive impact on modern holistic medicine. This includes his description of the qualities of foxglove, later used to treat heart conditions.
In this illustrated edition, over 400 herbs are described in detail, along with their ‘government and virtues’, remedies, and cautions. Although much of the medical advice must be taken with a pinch of salt, the engaging tone, enthusiasm, and expertise of the author are irresistible and highly entertaining.

An ok version of Culpeper’s Herbal
This is nice to hold, and interesting to read, but lacks a good index. Though the added herbs are nice, if you plan on using the book for any sort of medical reason I would suggest buying a more comprehensive version of this Herbal that includes an index. There are also versions with full color pictures. This is more of a nostalgic book than a practical one.

Beautiful reference! This makes a wonderful addition to my herbal library. Culpeppers is a classic. My only wish would be larger monographs to see the details.

If you are looking for a current, easy to read, herbal resource – this isn’t it.
The info is probably solid and it’s thorough…but it’s a tough read.

Complete with astro signatures and growing properties
Eve Monroe –
As it says it was the complete work, I thought it was a reproduction of the manuscript. Disappointment…

Bu eserin orjinali duruyor mu, ya da orjinaline en yakinini nasil secebilirim diye dusunurken bu baskiyi sectim. Benim merak ettigim kisim Culpeper’in astrolojik iliskilendirmeleriydi.

A handy guide to herbs

There are several versions of this book available on Kindle (and also in paperback and hard cover). Some are difficult to read, appearing to have just been scanned. The editor of this book has done an excellent job of presenting the information in modern English and an intelligible manner, including hyperlinks within the book. Culpepper, as both a physician and apothecary, believed in the then accepted Galen theory of bodily humours (not displaced until the 1800’s), so while the actual medical advice is of questionable effective value, it is of historic interest as a view into the mind of the contemporary physician, and the decription of the plants and their use/ misuse is of some practical interest. Even today many of the plants are used in ‘alternative’ medicine.
