Colitis, Crohns, Antibiotics…no more fear!!
When a product is deserving of a review then I am all game in taking 15 mins out of my day to write one; and this product is worthy of 50 reviews. So here we go:Back in June I was put on Flagyl and Cipro. Both very strong antibiotics in their own right. Bacteria called Clostridium difficile (or C. difficile) are a common cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. They can cause severe diarrhea and an infection called pseudomembranous colitis.—Not good because this is what happened to me from taking too many antibiotics. On top of the antibiotic induced colitis, I also have severe Crohns with 5 ft of small intestines removed and over 1/3 of the large with chronic diarrhea associated with what little healthy intestines are left.Moving on to August, I am put on Flagyl alone due to my intestines never quite recovering from the June course. Again, I am struck with severe pain and an extreme increase in bowel movements. I almost couldn’t get through the full dose but I just managed to. (This course did help reverse the damage done from the June course but not completely)At the end of October, my Crohns disease is at a mild state, but I get a bad infection in my toe and after 2 weeks of it getting worse I am put on another course of antibiotics, this time Cephalexin. My Intestines again pay the price and about 5 days into my course I couldn’t take it no more so I do a quick Google search of the best probiotic claims out there. Culturelle came up #1. I go to Amazon and buy immediately!! Mind you I have tried many many probiotics before and because I have Crohns disease I could never find one that either worked or made me feel better. Usually either I never felt anything or I would get much much worse from the aggravation of the products irritating my intestinal lining.When I received these it was about 4 days after starting my course of antibiotics. I commenced taking them immediately as I was once again in severe pain from the major flare up caused by all these antibiotics. To my surprise I got better within 2-4 days and I continued to take the probiotics. I did not know for sure if it was the probiotics or a fluke chance of good luck. But no worries, my guess is going to be put to the test.Fast foward: It is November 12th and as I am writing this, I am here to say that once again I was put back on another course of antibiotics on the10th (no, the toe never healed and I dont want it chopped off….jk) This time I was put on a high dosage of Clindamycin. It has only been 2 days but my Crohns is doing very well and I have no intestinal cramps or pain like I usually do. Im thinking these things actually work!!I will give another update in 2 weeks, as this product says to use 10 days after you stop the antibiotics. But so far I am extremely happy with this product. I only wish I found it sooner. Wishing my gut luck!! See you guys soon with an update.

Bad batch
Update: They have gotten back in touch and promised that a refund is on its way as well as a prepaid mailer to return the remainder of the bad batch. I have a long positive history with Culturelle, so if this is my only bad experience, I will continue to be a loyal customer. I am leaving the original review up (though increasing from one to four stars) because I think it’s important for people to be aware that there may be quality control issues and some people just have a bad reaction (especially to the inulin in some of the formulations). I’ve always had great results with Culturelle, but it IS disconcerting to know that a bad batch can slip past quality control. If they get back to me with any info about their findings once they’ve received the returned product, I will update. I really hope they do analyze it and can figure out what went wrong. There used to be just one Culturelle product. Now there are so many that are so similar to one another with minor differences that it can be confusing. I’ve ordered more from another seller to replace the product I have to return, and even though I’ve always done fine with the inulin, the one I ordered this time is inulin-free. With 15 billion lactobacilli per capsule, t’s a happy medium between regular Culturelle (of which I’ve always taken 2 caps, 10 billion microorganisms each) and the extra strength (20 billion per cap, so I only take one. Here’s hoping there will be no more adverse reactions. I’m posting because I probably would never have suspected Culturelle as the cause of my symptoms if I hadn’t recently read other reports of similar experiences when I was going through reviews trying to decide which of the current Culturelle options was the best choice/value for me. Even so, I doubted myself, but everytime I stopped it I got better and every time I took it again I’d have a rough day, so it seems pretty likely the Culturelle really was off. I’m really grateful that they are taking the issue seriously.I seem to have gotten a bad batch of this particular Culturelle formula. I took most of one box of 20, on and off. I kept stopping because I was so sick. Every time I’d start back on it, I’d experience serious digestive distress again. I have a digestive illness, but the symptoms I was getting are not typical of my illness. I wasn’t sure if the symptoms were being caused by Culturelle until I started on a different box and instead of being made sicker by it, I was helped as usual. I’ve taken Culturelle for years. It’s very disconcerting to think I could have been taking a contaminated product. I have contacted them and they seem interested to replace or refund the defective Culturelle, which is great, but it’s been a while and no follow-up, even when I checked in with them. They also have a policy that requires you return product prior to refund and they claim they require WEEKS to process a refund. The last I heard they were going ahead with a refund, and were going to send me a prepaid mailer to return the unused product, but so far nothing. If anything changes, I’ll update. I’ve taken Culturelle for many years now and have never before had an adverse reaction. I worry now that their quality control has suffered as they’ve branched out into a wide variety of formulas.
