Great for IBD issues
We’ve really been enjoying this protein powder. Not only does it taste good and mix easily, but it’s also been surprisingly gentle on digestion. For someone dealing with IBD issues, finding a supplement that doesn’t cause discomfort is a big deal, and this one has actually been helpful. It gives us the protein boost we need without the usual stomach problems, which makes it a staple in our routine. Vanilla tastes great, dissolves just fine!
Vanilla taste is very good (and I normally don’t like vanilla!) – I mix it with my Ryze mushroom coffee as a creamer! I have no problem with clumping at all – I put it in a jar and shake it around. (See pic) No blender bottle needed. It does create some foam, depending on how hard you shake it, but you can drink the foam. I’m also pleased with the creamy taste without the need for a bunch of oils like other brands use to create the creamy taste! I haven’t experienced any bloating issues at all with it.

The simpler, the better
I’m following a strict Candida protocol, and needed a high quality protein to get in my protein macros, without the ingredients or junk that cause inflammation. My functional nutritionist recommended this brand, the unflavored being the most pure and simple. I’ve read other peoples way of making this, and i think they are being too complex. This is a bone broth protein, so it does have more of a thicker foundation. I simply take a scoop in a very large coffee mug, I use hot water like a ‘tea’, and add in some MCT oil, and some sea salt, and I’ve also experimented with a teaspoon of raw cacao. Use a small frother/blender to mix and sprinkle some cinnamon. It’s basically a ‘coffee’ alternative in the morning with 26 grams of protein and healing benefits for your gut microbiome.

Best way to use Unflavored
For those that bought the unflavored version, let me save you some grief. The beef flavor and smell is really hard to hide in my opinion. Get yourself one of those battery powered hand mixers on Amazon for like seven bucks and some organic beef broth. Poor 2 cups of broth in a bowl and add a scoop of the powder. Use the hand mixer for about 30 seconds and pop in the microwave for one minute. Add a bunch of seasoning like garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, etc. and mix until combined put it back in the microwave for 1-2 mins. This was the best way for me to quickly intake this powder without having to make complex smoothies and using a blender.If you want to make a meal out of it, add Shin black ramen and a couple of hard boiled eggs! If you’re staying away from processed food, just add some plain rice stock noodles and fresh veggies instead.

Ammonia smell, beware of buying through Amazon
I rarely leave negative reviews, mainly because my issue is usually resolved to my satisfaction. I recently purchased this product but when I opened it up the smell of ammonia was very strong and offensive. I didn’t feel it was safe to consume. I looked at reviews on Amazon and I’m not the only one to experience this. Amazon said it wasn’t returnable so I called the company. Designs for Health has a great reputation. I’ve used many of their products and never had an issue. I called them and was told they had not heard of this and that since I bought it from Amazon that I had to return it to them. Now this is a problem as I now have a product that is unusable that was expensive. Proceed with caution purchasing this product from Amazon. I think it would be fine to purchase from the company because if there is a problem they will stand behind their product.

Flavor is good, does not dissolve well in cold liquid in a blender bottle (gets very clumpy) but in room temp liquid it dissolves fairly well in a blender bottle. Overall I like it, I wish it was cheaper though.

High quality, delicious protein powder
I have been using this protein powder in my morning smoothie for about a year now, after first hearing Chris Kresser mention the product in his podcast. I just wasn’t hungry in the mornings and I knew I needed a way to start my day with some good calories (i.e. protein and fat, minimal carbs). Add to that an intolerance to dairy protein (the problem for me is really casein, but I also wanted to avoid whey if possible), and this powder was exactly what I needed.It took some fiddling with the smoothie recipe, but now it consistently blends well with the other ingredients. If you try to mix it with just water, it’s quite possible that you get the “soup” with chunks of protein floating around. It tastes okay that way but doesn’t really look appetizing. The trick is to add some fat to the mix – MCT oil is what I use, along with a couple raw eggs. Then maybe a super greens kind of supplement (chocolate flavored works best with this vanilla protein powder) and occasionally some unmodified potato starch (resistant starch!). Then I blend in the Magic Bullet. It’s actually super tasty, and now I look forward to ‘breakfast’ every morning.Yes, the price is pretty steep, but this is high quality stuff. And one canister will last several weeks of daily use. I use a dose and a half (i.e. 3 tablespoons) each morning, and I get about 3 weeks of smoothies out of it. If you only use the standard dose, there are 30 servings per canister. 27g (1 serving) of high quality protein for breakfast every morning for a month for ~$80 = $2.66 per breakfast. That’s downright affordable.

This is the only protein powder I can tolerate. I have a very sensitive stomach and with IBS symptoms. I cannot tolerate dairy, so whey is out of the questions, and pea protein gives me horrible stomach pain. I’m so thankful I can have Designs for Health protein powder, or I’d not be achieving my recommended protein intake. The chocolate blended with frozen cherries is the best, and the unflavoured blended with frozen mangos is also delicious.
