I’ve tried a lot of acne products, but the e.l.f. Skin Blemish Breakthrough is hands down my favorite. It’s super easy to use, I just apply it every night, and it fits perfectly into my routine without any hassle. Works great, is invisible, rolls on smoothly. I thought maybe it wouldn’t be as good as the creams, like the Clean & Clear Acne Spot Treatment that has a higher percentage of Salicylic Acid, but it’s just as effective, easier to use, and costs less. (And you don’t need to wash it off your fingertip after applying. 🙂 )

Here’s the thing
Salicylic acid is an exfolilant. It’s unclogs your pores actually causing more pimples at first. It isn’t really going to treat a pimple you already have other than it does have some anti-inflammatory properties which might make the area less red. But it is not going to “cure” a pimple you already have. It also takes weeks (4-6) of regular use of it to “purge” your pores and during this time you’ll get way more pimples until the cycle of skin shedding is done. So using a product that contains it serves to ultimately prevent pimples by keeping your pores unclogged. But you have to stick with using it consistently and suffer the increase in break outs (I started using an SA cleanser 3 weeks ago and every single day I get a minimum of 3-4 new pimples and sometimes even more). The good news is I personally don’t think the new pimples hang around as long and are mostly small superficial ones with a few larger cystic ones thrown in. This is a very hard lesson I’m ashamed to say took me until I was in my 50’s to understand, when perimenopause has taken me back to the complexion of my teens (and not in a good way). All that being said, what I like about this product is A. the price, B. the ease of using it in the sense that the product never has to touch your fingers. What I don’t like is it’s a lower concentration of salicylic acid than other spot “treatments”. I have another brand that is 2% but it’s much less user friendly and costs twice as much. For those complaining that the roller ball does not allow any product to come out, you have to frequently turn this upside down while using to get the product on the ball. Then it works fine. If you go into using this with the understanding it’s not a miracle worker, then I give it 4 stars. If you go into it thinking it’s going to magically cure your pimples overnight, I’d give it 0 starts because it’s not going to do that.

I bought this for my teenage skin who has had the odd spot on his teenage face. Its a great clean product without the nasties and works well on spots and blemishes. He just dabs it on at night after washing his face (ELF do a face wash to, but we use ‘The Oridinary Squalene’ wash) and most blemishes and spots are reduced or gone by morning. Great size to keep in the toiletries bag and ELF is generally a great brand.
