First impression? This is a very cute and giftable box! Love the inside-bottom of the box with a reminder to reuse or recycle the box- I’ll be for sure reusing it bc is sturdy and looks way better than others I have some smaller items stored in… Will add pics:)This is amazingly well-thought out and very well made! Each well-wrapped jar with their own decorative outer wrapping including the name of the herb that comes with/goes into each one… All arrived completely intact. Jars appear to be a wide-mouth quart sized mason jar.Removing each lid, that has a helpful QR code on it, too… inside is the plastic hanging basket, the bag of “grow medium” rocks- seem like small lava rock or something bc are porous and lighter weight than usual gravel rocks. Has the bag of herb seeds- pic of the jar etc is the Mint one… plant fertilizer packet and my almost favorite part? A super clearly written and easy to understand instruction booklet…. the whole back side of it is all “helpful tips” which is great to have, too!I couldn’t love this set anymore than I do. Congrats to Modern Sprout company from Chicago… Y’all did a great job with this!! 100% very highly recommend and I’ll be for sure checking out their other products. Amazing value for this, as all is top-notch (top-shelf/top-tier? Eh, y’all get it!:) quality. Is perfect!! ❤️❤️❤️

Price point and quality leave a lot to be desired
Ah the dubious nature of sprouting jars. How do I love and hate thee. Firstly, these jars have no real substrate or soil, just loose gravel to act as a planting medium. The gravel is also almost so small it cant be held by the plastic mesh pots and a lot of dirt and small pebbles fell out as they were rinsed. There is also no great wicking going on as the rocks are supposed to do this but I’ve already seen it dry on top a few times, giving it a small spritz to keep the seeds damp. The seed packets themselves are okay, and while this looks like a very cute set, the fact is, the cost of everything? I really can’t justify the price, especially when sprouting the seeds it a big gamble in itself. You’re better off with some alternative grow jar kits out there honestly, as this feels more a cash grab with the quality of what you’re getting and paying for. If they had some carbon, some coco fiber, maybe I’d see more value, maybe I’d be more confident, but thus far, I haven’t seen really much growth, and as someone who grows their own microgreens, this is a pretty bad sign as far as kits go.

Clear, concise instructions for cute hydroponic herb jars
The self-watering hydroponics herb jars from Modern Sprout are adorable. The instructions for both starting the jars and ongoing care are clear and concise. My seeds began sprouting on time, although I was a bit worried about the parsley, as it was a bit later than the mint and basil. I have just completed my first weekly water change and fertilization, and it couldn’t be simpler. I am especially looking forward to the fresh mint, as I had a delicious pineapple mint smoothie in Costa Rica recently and can’t wait to replicate it.

After reading the directions, these are apparently not to be used for growing seedlings that you transplant into soil. For hydroponics, or even mason jar gardening with soil (yes, you can do that) I prefer individual lettuce plants over herbs. Lettuce only gets so big, and does well in systems like this. Herb plants actually get quite big, and I don’t think they do as well with smaller containers. Mint might actually work, as long as you kept it to one plant per container. For some reason they instruct you to plant the whole packet. That will lead to severe overcrowding. This would make a cute gift, as long as it’s within your price range.

Indoor growing kit, comes with 4 main items. 3 items being the garden jars with sprouts and soil inside and sealed, the fourth being a grow light. This kit is great for fall, winter, and colder months where herbal gardens cant yet grow to its full potential due to weather. This set comes with everything that you need to grow basil, parsley, and rosemary. Just add water, plug the light in, and watch your mini garden grow indoors. I will add this was a bit pricey, but the jars can be reused, and the light will work with future plants.
