Excited to Get Started Making My Own Beauty Products!
I really like the variety of beauty products that I can make myself! The book clearly lists items I will need and shows step-by-step instructions on how to make them. I can experiment now on myself (ie – I can pamper myself first!) and then decide which ones I can make for Christmas for family and friends! I can’t wait to get started on these!

Best Book of this type I have purchased so far!
This is a well written book by a biochemist. I have tried some of the formulas and they have been good. Had a problem with the shampoo but it is not the first time I have had problems with homemade shampoo formulas. I do not like the fact that she recommends rubbing alcohol. I use vodka or grain alcohol. I like the foaming face cleanser and eye makeup remover better than the commercial ones I have purchased. Also very pleased with her odor neutralizing (deodorant) formula. Lots of good detailed information.

Not what I wanted…
Not what I was hoping for…I was really excited to have a cookbook of sorts to make masks, scrubs, and lotions. However, this book is full of recipes with odd ingredients you are not likely to have or be able to find easily. Blue cornflower roughly chopped? This is not the book I was looking for – disappointed.

You may have heard the expression ‘hindsight is 2020 vision’ and we do see things differently in retrospect. I personally have been processed by the entire make-it-yourself/artisan perfume business. It is a lovely hobby, but what you see is not necessarily what you get.Originally, I bought Fifi Maacaron’s Natural Beauty Alchemy in late 2016. To be honest, back then, I was disappointed on opening. I wanted a facial wash and shampoo to make from scratch, and was disappointed to discover that both recipes were made with Liquid Castile Soap.For a start, I didn’t have any. But a friend of mine swears by Dr Bronner’s Castile Soap; I get the whole cult thing; retrospectively speaking, its just not for me. The hype goes that its suitable for washing hair, face, body, kitchen floor, teeth. So began my quest for this miracle soap, I found a supplier, couldn’t wait to test it. I even made up samples for friends and family.My face exploded in spots, as it is made up with coconut oil (ranks as @ 4 on the comedogenic scale). This meant more research, more books, more oils, ingredients, equipment, and several visit to the doctor for antibiotics that eventually made me ill. My hair came out like it had been glued to my scalp, the shower gel that I added my beautiful organic Lavender to @1% still didn’t mask the awful aroma.So I thought I’d have a go at making my own, without the coconut oil, as I”ve never actually made any soap, I had to buy everything, including safety gear; I’ve never made anything, because I just did not feel confident handling lye and don’t know what to do with all the product once made.As somebody that has now been around the block; I feel qualified to tell you that in my opinion Fifi Maacaron’s book Natural Beauty Alchemy; it is a genuine piece, she has tested her recipes, studied her ingredients and with the exception the Castile Soap recipes that just do not work for me personally; her ingredients are easily sourced and recipes simple. Do not buy her book and think that she is going to teach you how to become a cosmetic chemist.Of all the MIY Cosmetic books in my library, Maacaron’s is one of my favourites. Its a classic.
