The Cubi people have lived a secluded and quiet existence since they arrived in America. A shipment of new breeders brought two changes with it: Their next King and a mutated breeder. Those two changes set off a chain of events that the Cubi are far from ready to deal with.

Daniel aspires and works hard to find his future place as the sovereign ruler of his people. Seldon fights to rise to his new station and level of responsibilities as the right-hand Lord to a King, but the fight is also with himself. The breeders, who were freed during the upheaval in the Great House of Dahlidin, return to the human society, but not everybody finds it easy to acclimatize.

Although forced into action, Daniel’s hands are tied. Tough decisions that will either end their war or step it up have to be made. The only question is whether a Kingdom that young is even ready for that.

Another Great Installment in the Series
While plans proceed for Daniel’s investiture as king of the North American cubi, the young man himself still isn’t completely sure he will be up to the task. The prospect would be daunting enough, without the added responsibility of being practically in a state of war with rogue elements of the human military. Meanwhile, freed “breeder” Alex is having trouble adjusting to life outside the cubi world. He felt used as a sex slave by the cubi, but now that he’s home with his homophobic parents and working a thankless job in a stock room, he begins to see his former life in a new light.Although you would think, five volumes in, that this series would be winding up, it will apparently go on for at least another two books. Yet it continues to surprise with new story lines and sub-plots. While Daniel’s rise to power during the simmering conflict with humans remain the central theme, this installment features a strong converging plot line focusing on Alex. Although he plays a somewhat pivotal role in the first few books, allowing us to understand the character of Seldon as well as the developing relationship between Daniel and Seldon, Alex was still a minor character and when he was freed by the cubi as they were attacked, it seemed that he would disappear from the story line. He didn’t appear in the previous volume at all.Alex proves to be quite an interesting and complex character. A good portion of the story is told from his point of view, as he struggles to find his self-worth with his newfound freedom. It’s a rather minor plot point (so not really spoiling anything) but I rather liked the thought experiment of what it might be like for Alex, in effect suffering withdrawal-like symptoms once he’s no longer getting dosed by the cubi regularly. It’s just one aspect of someone forced to re-examine their beliefs as they’re trying to find their place in the world. While Alex’s story may be interesting, it’s just one of a few threads running through this book. In the end, they all weave back through Daniel and his quest to be the kind of king his people need. While Seldon and Daniel have been the two constant main characters throughout all five books, we continue to learn more about them, and see them adapt to the new challenges that face them. Daniel not only relies on his lovers, and effective regents, Seldon and Caledon to guide him, he also relies heavily on Elakdon, King of the Northern European cubi, to help him understand the role of the royals in cubi society, as well as their history. The books have built quite a convincing world where succubi and incubi really exist. This installment even pokes a little fun at itself by suggesting that popular fiction such as this are all part of the cubi plan to reveal themselves to the world of ordinary humans. Perhaps the best part of this series is how it’s managed to remain fresh, with new sub-plots that complement the major story arc. So many series spanning more than three or four volumes end up being repetitive, with the protagonists facing the same villains over and over again, but these books so far have been very successful in introducing new ideas and exploring different aspects of the fantasy world they’ve created.

Amazing addition to a strong series!
So I just finished this book and I have to say it’s just as good as the first 4.Daniel is coming into being a King of the cubi people during a time of war and it’s pretty impressive watching how he handles everything. Seldon and Caledon are just as great as always but this book isn’t focusing so much on there love as it is on Daniel coming into his role as a King and the war. When I started this book I thought it was about only Alex and was upset thinking that Daniel’s storyline was being abandoned for Alex’s but it wasn’t. I loved reading Alex’s storyline and seeing how he is handling being back out in the human world and seeing how he views the Cubi was actually really insightful and shows the way they treat the breeders and how he, as a breeder, feels about the Cubi. The only reason I marked this as a tear-jerker was because of a few scenes that weren’t sad but beautiful and just made me so happy it literally brought a tear to my eye. If you’ve gotten this far in the series you know how well written and great these books are and just how great the world building is done. My only complaint is where the book leaves off. I won’t say what it is because it’s a spoiler but OMFG I WANT MORE NOW! I actually got to the last page and was super upset. Because the series is ongoing theres been cliffhangers before but I binge read the first 4 so it wasn’t too bad, but man this one was torture for me. I cant wait to see what comes next with everyone and I pray book 6 opens exactly where book 5 left off and the scene isn’t skipped over.

4.5 Great book, but some editing issues
I loved this book in the Cubi series. Loved seeing the Cubi strike back (unique method), loved the way Daniel and Caledon helped Seldon heal, and I especially loved seeing Alex and Jeff again. I had been wondering what happened to them ever since the attack on the old House of Dahlidin. It was very intriguing to watch Alex struggle with the changes coming home wrought and the realizations he had. Excellent! And watching Seldon deal with Mr. Bale cracked me up. A human worrying more about getting his space than getting his people to work? Yeah, (hate to say it) but that’s typical corporate bureaucracy. Poor Seldon does not make a good diplomat! Overall a great read, but I did subtract a 1/2 star from the rating for some editing issues and confusion knowing who speaking, sometimes.I received a free review copy and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Again, I can’t get over how engaging these books are!
After so much horror inflicted on the Cubi, it was good to see this book end in some hope and joy. It’s almost humorous how the US government thought that a race of beings who, in a large part, are older than the United States itself, were too naive to have contingency plans set for when he humans attacked. Also, do they really think that the Cubi are gullible enough to believe that a general and a colonel could really suborn three entire installations without anyone being the wiser about it, and while the government is “fully investigating” them? It’s blatant that while they are being held up as scapegoats, the government is fully invested in bullying the Cubi just as they did, and do, the native nations. Will someone in the human hierarchy finally cut this off as a failure, or will things continue to escalate?

Another great installment of this series
Another installment of the Cubi series, and Meraki does not disappoint us at all. I was excited to learn that in this book, we got to read more about Alex who left them for reasons he had at that point. He came back, and we got to know how insecure he is, and how he developes throughout the book. Then we also got to see how Daniel goes from Prince to King in the middle of a war battle. Young but oh he developes so well thoughout the book. The merging between these two plots are great, and when it merges you sit there with a stomach full of butterflies. I really love this series to pieces. Well done Meraki on this one. Now it’s just to slip my loafers on and sit back and wait for the next book.

I have been following this author’s work for a while now. Meraki is one of 3 author’s that I follow to the point of re reading their whole series before reading a new release no matter how many is in the series. As for this book…..wow….I can’t wait to see what happens next. I won’t spoil it for others but I will say that Daniel has come a long way throughout this series and I can’t wait to read what happens next.If you like paranormal and sexy mm reads then this is a series i fully recommend. I can’t explain fully how much I enjoy this series because it’s soooooo goooood lol

For a series with a lot of sex, it’s really about love. Love of a people, culture and freedom to be who your heart desires.
