Everywhere you look there are probiotic products. One of its global pioneers explains how this came about and what to look for when deciding to use beneficial microbes for your health.
In 1982 when recently graduated Gregor Reid was introduced to the concept of microbes benefitting humans, almost nobody had heard of the term probiotic. Today, probiotics are a $60 billion market involving multiple industries and scientists around the world, spanning applications in humans, animals, insects, coral, fish and other species, all with the intention of improving health.
After a career that spanned over 600 peer-reviewed publications, multiple international awards and more than 60,000 citations to his work, Professor Reid now tells the story of how the probiotic field emerged and the challenges that he and others faced. He emphasizes that products need to be developed through diligent science and clinical studies.
Starting out trying to help women with painful urinary and vaginal infections, Professor Reid was at the heart of the microbiome field, working with colleagues all over the world and expanding into gut, skin and heart health as well as applications to honeybees.
In a fascinating view of the field, filled with humor and surprises, Professor Reid doesn’t hold back in criticizing bureaucracies, countering falsehoods and challenging companies who put profit above scientific validity. This can’t-put-down novel is easy for lay people, scientists, and students to enjoy. Using fun analogies from the golf course where hurdles abound, Professor Reid clarifies what probiotic are and what they are not.
This must-listen story will leave you thinking, ‘wow, did that really happen’ and ‘so, that’s what it really means’. You think you know fermented foods, prebiotics, synbiotics or which probiotic you might take, then try the quizzes in the book.
Beyond the discussion of science, this is a personal tale about how belief and perseverance can conquer rejection and ridicule. It is about why we need to bring discoveries to the people who need them the most, including in rural Africa, to fight malnutrition, disease and poverty.
In the end, this is a story about hope for the future.

A Must-Read Triumph: Delving into the world of Probiotics: A story about hope
I picked up this book thinking it would be all about probiotics with facts and figures on clinical trials.Thankfully, it was not. Instead, it was a brilliant story about how the author was at the very beginning of this area of science and how he plotted his way through rejection and ridicule from the scientific and medical communities and naivety of the business world. The story starts and ends on a golf course, which once you read it you will understand the analogy. For people thinking of starting a business, there are so many lessons to be learned. For students considering a career in science, definitely pick up a copy. If you’re just a person interested in probiotics and the human microbiome, there’s lots here you will benefit from reading. In fact, don’t buy a probiotic until you’ve read it!The author closes with travel stories from his career that are amazing, hilarious and a great way to round off the book

Educational and Inspiring
An excellent read that’s both educational, humorous, and inspiring from an author who is a pioneer in the field. Gregor’s heart has always been in the right place, and his humor ebbs through the read. An inspiring figure in the field, and a recommended read or listen!

Inappropriate Title
I was very disappointed in this book. It is about the Dr,s journey as a scientist and researcher on probiotics and very little information on probiotics! I do not recommend .

Inspiring and insightful
An inspiring story about the challenges of bringing new innovations into the science world, and the behind-the-scenes work of advancing the burgeoning probiotic industry – from a scientist that has been pushing the forefront of the field.

The book was a great way to learn about the journey and research that led Dr. Reid to expand our knowledge about the most effective probiotic microorganisms to be used for health benefits. It is an well worth the enjoyable and easy read.

The story of Dr. Reid’s scientific career is also very inspiring.

At last a proper explanation of probotics and what to look for to benefit our health and other species.

I literally learned nothing about how probiotics actually work to benefit the body or how they are created from a scientific standpoint. This book was self-published, which in itself is not usually an issue, but was clearly not up to traditionally published standards. I’m actually so disappointed I’m sending the book back for a refund.
