Morning Rituals
Energetically clear your space (3 minutes)
Nervous energy is palpable, whether you’ve been in its presence or you’ve been the one emitting it. After you’ve removed and organized any physical clutter, it’s time to energetically clear your space. Historically, energetic clearing has been used in different cultures with the help of plants, such as sage or palo santo. These plants are used in ceremonies at marked times of new beginnings, or through a practice called “smudging,” but they can also be used daily.
Use palo santo by lighting it—using an unscented candle works best—and then letting the flame go out. Waive it around, so that the smoke surrounds the area you’d like to clear and surrounds your body. It doesn’t burn for too long once lit, so it is perfect for small spaces or for clearing the energy around your altar or meditation nook before you meditate.

Midday Rituals
Touch your feet to the earth (3 minutes)
With anxiety being a predominantly ethereal or airy condition, it’s important to keep your feet on the earth. This is necessary in a symbolic way, but also in a literal way, since doing so is therapeutic.
Take a three-to-five-minute break when you repeatedly feel anxious. Trouble identifying only one time period? Choose one that is a point of transition. Find a place that is private and free of distractions. Now, take off your shoes and socks and press your feet into the ground. Close your eyes and note the sensation of your feet in contact with solid ground and what the surface feels like against your soles.
This practice is more powerful if you can connect your feet to grass, soil, or even (indoor) natural material like concrete or wood.

Evening Rituals
Nourishing nerve tonic (10 minutes)
2 cups (480 ml) dairy milk or almond milk, homemade if possible (see pages 244–45)1 teaspoon ground nutmeg1 teaspoon ground cinnamon¼ teaspoon turmericMaple syrupOptional medicinal herb boost: ½–1 teaspoon dashmula
Add the milk, nutmeg, cinnamon, turmeric, maple syrup to taste, and the dashmula, if using, to a small pot over medium-high heat. Whisk or stir until fully combined. Cook until the milk is fully heated through, 7 to 10 minutes. Cool to a drinking temperature before consuming.

Great book for getting a basic understanding of Ayurveda
This book is well written and does a great job of explaining the basic concepts of Ayurveda. I’ve read several books on Ayurveda and sometimes they can be a bit overwhelming to understand on your own. The author has included several easy to understand (and fairly easy to fit into your schedule) rituals to try out. There are breathing exercises, drink recipes, massage routines, meditations and some yoga poses suggested for different issues. She has them broken down into morning, midday and evening rituals. I keep this book out so I can quickly reference it when I need to. The author also has a website that has more information. The Ayurvedic Self-Care Handbook has already become one of my favorite books and I reference it often. If you’ve been curious about Ayurveda then I suggest giving this book a try.

A MUST read!
Sarah is incredibly adept at translating Ayurveda and it’s principles for a novice audience while keeping the information interesting enough to retain the attention of those who may know a bit more. It’s truly a gift. This book gives many tips that, while supremely simple to implement, possess the ability to have a profound effect. Even at a time when I feel far removed from any sort of routine, I never once felt condemned or overwhelmed by the advice this book provides. If you’re at all interested in wellness, Ayurveda, or just feeling a little bit better, this is the best place to start.

A true practitioner’s voice
Most of the ayurvedic books I read in the past only talk about rituals ignoring the geographic location. This book talks about Indian medicine for westerners and how they could relate to the drastic climate changes. I followed few instructions from the book and observed my teeth is glowing white, able to sleep continuous and my circadian rythm has been in synch.

An empowering attitude
I loved that I felt “okay” to be myself in her eyes–instead of me needing to fit a “norm,” her attitude is one of acceptance of each unique personality type. And she doesn’t require or insist on readers following everything. In fact, she acknowledges that many ideas she explains won’t work for certain people. How refreshing! I did find several things that do work well for me.

Beginners guide
Handy little book to give you some basics. Just remember ayurveda is a base of learning but each individual will have certain things that might”go against” what is being taught that work better for them.

Must Have for Anyone Seeking Meanigful Shifts
I feel like I’ve been waiting on this book my whole life. Sarah has a magical way of taking complex topics, ideas, and practices, and breaks them down in a way that is inviting, comforting, and familiar. This book is greatly changing the way I look at myself and the people in my life, and has shifted my approach to healing -physically and emotionally. Highly recommend to anyone seeking a way to add meaningful practice into your life. I can’t wait to give this as a gift.
