If the thought of bacteria conjures images of germs that should be avoided at all costs—and certainly not ingested—think again! Some friendly bacteria, called probiotics, are not only beneficial to your health, they’re essential. Now an internationally recognized scientist at a top U.S. medical school—one of the leading researchers in the field—sheds light on the extraordinary benefits of these natural health superstars.
Thanks to an explosion of research in recent years, one thing is clear: probiotics, the healthy bacteria that inhabit the digestive tract, are the body’s silent partners for good health, optimizing the power of the immune system to fight disease and the “bad” germs we fear. But how do they work? And in the face of factors like stress and poor diet, which decrease their numbers, how do you keep your supply well stocked?
Here is an up-to-the-minute, highly accessible guide to probiotics and the foods and supplements that contain and support them—many of which may be in your diet already. Discover:
The key role of probiotics and prebiotics in restoring healthy balance to our bodies, improving immune system functioning, and curbing inflammation
How to use probiotic foods and supplements to prevent and relieve allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, yeast infections, and the negative side effects of antibiotic use
New evidence that probiotics may help fight asthma, cardiovascular disease, breast and colon cancer, autoimmune diseases, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia—and even obesity
Natural sources of prebiotics, the nutrients that help make the digestive tract more hospitable for probiotic bacteria
The Probiotics Revolution also includes a step-by-step plan for incorporating the many food sources of probiotics and prebiotics into your diet, a complete buyer’s guide to probiotic supplements, and how to introduce probiotics to your family and children.

    Awesome
I think this book is excellent. It distills the research on probiotics and their effectiveness in treating various conditions into simple tables. I love the book because it is clear that Huffnagle is a science oriented individual who believes in proper research and testing. He has done a great job of simplifying a complex topic down to layman’s terms. The book clearly describes the emerging science around bacteria that typically live on and in us and their role with the immune system and various diseases. It gave me a lot of hope as we head into the future of defeating allergies and other diseases. However, I would describe this book as more informational than applicable. If your looking how to treat particular conditions than this book probably is not for you. However, If you would like a better understanding about beneficial bacteria and its role in human health, than I highly recommend this book. I found it to be a very easy read and enjoyable.

Will a revised version be on the works?
Outdated, somewhat, information on a topic that really should matter to a lot of people. Probiotics are a force to be reckoned with, and knowing the different strains of probiotics, and what each is capable of doing to assist the human body, is very important to determine what kind would work best for each individual needs. The Probiotics Revolution: The Definitive Guide to Safe, Natural Health Solutions Probiotic and Probiotics Foods and Supplements by Gary B. Huffnagle is filled with information, but as the author himself attests, this information in 2008 was at the beginning of what was to come, and much more is known by now that back then was still in its early stages of discovery. The author writes very well, and I, for one, wanted to find out how different strains can help in different conditions. Where one may suffer from chronic diarrhea to put it bluntly, another may have a reverse situation plaguing their health, such as constipation. There are just too many ways that probiotics can help, but knowing how to tell which kind does what, best ways to keep them fresh being that they are live cultures, or should I say friendly bacteria?, understanding the amount that might work best, and other questions that undoubtedly will make a person understand the promise hidden in this, apparently, wonder product that can truly change a life for the better, was my main desire when purchasing this book. Yes, they were later titles, but somehow this one still seemed to be a resource worth investing in, considering that the price was not too steep. Yes, I did learn probably a lot more than I bargained for, and at the end there were several pieces of advice on which kind to buy, and at the time of printing which companies seemed to be the more responsible as to quality. Let’s just say it had its moments, not the whole book proved as valuable as some of the parts, but the overall impression was a positive one. I have noticed that the science of probiotics is not readily available to the general public, and where authors with authority have written on countless other health topics, this area of health remains a little elusive. I even searched for Doctors that specialize in probiotics as their main field, but apparently this is a subject with minimal appeal in career oriented health practitioners, even though it is amazing what probiotics are capable of accomplishing in a relatively short period of time. After reading this book I went from being a white belt, to a blue belt, which is the next step higher to white which is a total beginner. Been taking probiotics for about 2 years now, with great results, but I realize this is on ongoing regimen that must be adopted for the duration. 4 Stars.

This is THE probiotics book to read
So many books about probiotics make health claims without any scientific basis. Fortunately, The Probiotics Revolution isn’t one of them.Although published over ten years ago, this is THE book about the science of how probiotics work and why they’re important. The author is a University of Michigan immunologist who not only cites relevant (and numerous) scientific studies, he’s performed studies of his own.I’m hoping Dr. Huffnagle will write a sequel…

    Useful but very technical
This is good information, but it’s kind of like being told how to make a watch when all you want to know is the time. The author clearly knows his stuff, but it’s a bit of a slog through a LOT of science if all you want is to know what to take. It’s hard to find answers quickly — as in he’ll talk about how probiotics relate to a specific medical ailment but it’s hard to figure out which supplements to take (since they’re all different chapters and I haven’t gotten to that chapter).I hope this author does more, but teams up with a writer more geared toward a lay audience. If you have a health issue, you may be motivated to read it to look for answers, but someone looking for a simple discussion may be put off by the confusing sequencing of information.

Easy to read and extremely informative – A must read for a basic understanding of health!
I cannot say enough positive about this book! It is easy to read (even the one important part that is more scientific but put into terms like “detective cells” etc so it is easier for us lay people to follow) and very informative. Read it and you will understand why a healthy gut is so important to your overall well-being. Also, it has specific product recommendations in the back that were helpful.

    My introduction to Probiotics.
When I purchased this book, I was looking for ways to prevent, or curb the old age slipping and sliding of things that shouldn’t be slipping and sliding. Being in my mid-60’s, and hoping to live for at least another decade or three, I decided to try to improve my physical fitness through healthy eating, at least to start. My physical fitness has been sliding for the last almost seven years since retirement began, and having gained some 30 excess pounds since then, I thought I better start trying to do something before it’s too late. Although I haven’t finished reading the book yet, I have started some of the basic steps toward improvement. The book has the basics that anyone who is interested in the natural way to health should learn.

Great Book really helped us a lot!!
My wife has suffered from bad upset stomachs for a long time, been to doctors and specialists, used all the regular pharmaceuticals without relief. This book made specific recommendations, which we followed. VIOLA No more problems. Highly recommend, turns out the right probiotics can treat things I never dreamed of, AND I WAS A SKEPTIC!!

  8. Healthy Elite

Although this is book is a couple of years old it is still very relevant. With the help of this book I have gained a better understanding of the symbiotic relationship between us as hosts and the friendly bacteria which we host in our gut.

  9. jocelyn couture

    very satisfied,

  10. Patrick

I did not like it, because it was not simple enough to prepare. It failed to meet my satisfaction!

  11. Lesley Ball

    As expected

  12. Kerri

It was ok. Would be great for someone just learning about probiotics. It was published in 2007 so I should’ve known some of the info would be dated. My bad.
