An acclaimed nutrition educator reveals how the foods you’re eating to get healthy might be making you sick.
“Sally Norton’s well-researched book makes a truly important contribution to the literature in revealing just how much oxalates can damage the human body.”—Nina Teicholz, author of The Big Fat Surprise
If you’re eating a healthy diet and you’re still dealing with fatigue, inflammation, anxiety, recurrent injuries, or chronic pain, the problem could be your spinach, almonds, sweet potatoes, and other trusted plant foods. And your key to vibrant health may be quitting these so-called superfoods.
After suffering for decades from chronic health problems, nutrition educator Sally K. Norton, MPH, discovered that the culprits were the chemical toxins called oxalates lurking within her “healthy,” organic plant-heavy diet. She shines light on how our modern diets are overloaded with oxalates and offers fresh solutions including:
• A complete, research-backed program to safely reverse your oxalate load
• Comprehensive charts and resources on foods to avoid and better alternatives
• Guidance to improve your energy, optimize mood and brain performance, and find true relief from chronic pain
In this groundbreaking guide, Norton reveals that the popular dictum to “eat more plants” can be misleading. Toxic Superfoods gives health-seekers a chance for improved energy, optimum brain performance, graceful aging, and true relief from chronic pain.

Empowering and paradigm shifting 🙂
An incredibly detailed, practical and empowering resource that helped me realize the root causes of my dis-ease. After rereading this book many times, as well as listening to most of this authors interviews online, I continue to improve my state of health. Without this resource I would be lost and maybe still on the path to an early grave. I have eliminated many dire symptoms of dis-ease. I recommend this book to many people who are willing to open their mind to a different paradigm, than the cultural one I have been raised into. I applaud you for considering this source. The path is not easy but definitely worth it!

Read this valuable informative book !
This book turned me on my head…. I found the information in this book extremely interesting and made me rethink the “healthy “ foods I have been eating. I read most of it in a day. Gee, I wonder why I always feel worse after trying to eat a healthy vegetarian diet, or increasing my veggie intake. Read this book!! You do need to follow it hardcore, but it will make you look at your food choices differently.

A Must Read For Anyone Interested in Health
Sally’s book has been a life changer for me. I’ve been passionate about health & fitness for the past 30 years, continuously striving to eat healthier, be healthier. Doctors continuously encouraged my mainly vegan diet and my ambitious work out routines, and friends and family would look to me for advice and inspiration. But slowly over time medical issues began, to which I made excuses because Doctor’s said “nothing to worry about”, “you’re super healthy”, yet: early onset arthritis (had to stop running and switch to walking, hard to kayak and bike – back pain), increasing fatigue/brain fog (I should sleep more), increasing itchy skin patches (always had sensitive skin, may be my 2 new rescue dogs who aren’t hypoallergenic this time), wounds (frozen shoulder injury, minor cuts/bruises) that just wouldn’t heal. Then this past year and a half the eye issues began – floaters, eye pain, cloudiness, along with a very strange “stress/anxiety” (my career has always been stressful but rewarding – I’m no stranger to stress, but this was very different – anxiety over everything), and the final straw – an abnormal mammogram (“calcifications”). I couldn’t understand how all of this could be happening – I’m only in my 50s and supposedly living a very healthy lifestyle. My eye doctor, who shares my passion for health & fitness, recommended Sally’s book to me. He discovered it after he started having eye and other issues and realized his oxalate consumption from his “super healthy diet” was the cause of his issues (he did not have kidney stones either). While reading Sally’s book I was in shock – page after page – the best way to describe it is a “golden aura moment” when everything became clear/puzzle pieces fit. I was eating about ~2500-3000 mg of oxlates per day – and thinking it was super healthy. I couldn’t believe it. I know that if I had read it any sooner, I wouldn’t have been able to accept the fact that everything I knew to be true was, in fact, not true. I would have made excuses about the fact that I never got a kidney stone, so my body must be able to tolerate the oxalates. Yes, it was hard to accept, but I knew I had to try it – worse case, I could go back. I followed the plan in the book and within 2 weeks the fatigue, brain fog and extreme stress/anxiety was completely gone – I was back to my old self. Things have continued to improve over the past 5 months – shoulder pain from a 3-year-old injury is now gone, joint pain/”early onset arthritis” is significantly improved (back to running, and no more joint pain in my hands, no more back pain), no more itchy skin patches (thankfully because my dogs weren’t going anywhere!), eye pain & cloudiness is now sporadic/not 24/7. As Sally said, I know I’m still in the “honeymoon” phase and the hefty oxalate dumping is yet to come (so far, it’s been tolerable). But because I now know firsthand that high oxalate consumption was my problem, I am committed to riding out the oxalate dumping storm to brighter, truly healthy days ahead. I hope this book will be as informative and game-changing for everyone struggling to reform from a high oxalate “super healthy” diet like me. As George Bernard Shaw said, “progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything”. Best of luck to all on your journey to better health. Thank you, Sally, for all of your work and dedication to sharing this life saving information. I’m forever grateful.

Great research, but concerning error found.
I have not finished book but still wanted to start taking suggested supplements after hearing a couple of Susan Norton interviews. Her enthusiasm came through and maybe her rush to get this out there explains why some of the content in this book is lacking accuracy and could cause some confusion. So far, I understood the importance of keeping track of potassium intake, so i calibrated my measuring spoons with a scale so I knew how much potassium I was getting in the salty sport drink and in the alkalizing drink. For sport drink as per recipe, the amount per 8 oz was approx 280 mg potassium (250 mg using her table on pg 242). The alkalizing lemon drink, depending on how much water your glass holds, has 380 mg potassium/serving, using the provided table. HOWEVER, on pg 243 the last paragraph states, “That water [alk lemon] supplies about 70 mg potassium per 8 oz”. One would have to use 43 oz water to make the 70 mg/8 oz true. Even using 16 oz water(“tall glass”) would supply almost 200 mg potassium/8oz which is three fold higher than what is quoted above, especially if you add in potassium from the lemon juice (+60 mg), which doesnt seem to be factored in either. This is concerning after reading about the suggestion to keep track of potassium intake when adding supplements. What also takes some discerning is the table of potassium rich foods she sourced & referenced listing the amount of potassium in the selections. Using portion size for a typical meal would have been more user friendly, defining precooked portion size and cooked food potassium amount, since the type of cooking affects the potassium left in food and the quantity of food (ie. Mushrooms & greens cook down in volume) For example, portobellos are listed as having 920 mg/23 oz.(raw or cooked wt?) Who eats that many in one meal? Whereas whitebutton mushrooms is listed as having 260 mg/8 oz, which ends up quite similar to the ports.(listed as 306 mg/8 oz). Measuring bok choy by cups, versus weight(is that cooked or raw?) Also, list includes 2/3 large egg (why not one?), 0.6 c chopped onion( why not 1/2 c.? Who ever uses decimals with cup measures?) Non liquid foods should be given by weight in grams and/or oz(precooked) , liquids should be given by measure(fl oz and/or ml). This is the most scientific method when determining a nutritional level of anything in food, which a dietitian should know and makes this source of info look VERY unprofessional and difficult to use.Im still looking forward to finishing book but will keep doing my own calculations when it comes to supplementing.I hope these critiques on some of her information doesnt detract from the important discovery she’s introduced to those of us trying to improve our diets. Maybe she just needs to find an editor/proofreader who is better versed in scientific writing and presentation to provide accuracy, clarity and especially user friendliness to this revolutionary health hack.I’ll try to get back to do an updated review after i finish reading it.

Health improved
This book has really changed my life! I had no idea of what I was doing with all the green smoothies, and spinach, salads, and almond milk, etc. Based on her advice, including things that help with oxalate dumping, I am feeling so much better now. And sleeping better.

After reading this book I removed as many oxalates from my diet as I could, and I feel that my health has improved based on the advice.

Extremely valuable lessons and informative. Everyone should read this book to know what food to avoid. Even the naturopath I went to did not know all the toxic food.

I’m only 25% in and I can wholeheartly say the information in this book is both shocking and lifesaving. (I have also watched several interviews with the author online) I immedately gifted a copy to the 2 most precious people in my life…and endless gratitude to my wife for finding this book at 3am one very sleepless night. I’ve read hundreds of books on health, diet and alternative medicine – as well as trying every diet and therapy under the sun for the past 40 years. Nothing ever came close to helping resolve the multitude of physical and mental health problems I experience. I see my story in page after page of Sally’s book and finally can make sense of why I have so many “subclinical” health issues. The path forward is credible, clear and hopeful.
