Anatomy and physiology in Ayurveda are based on the body’s function rather than structure. Eventually both are of equal importance. Nevertheless, this fundamental difference is primary in understanding the logic of Ayurvedic medicine as a whole. This textbook is written for the Western student of Ayurveda who lacks the cultural context of India – the context that views the body, and creation in general, functionally. Many different details on Ayurvedic physiology are clearly distinguished from Ayurvedic anatomy in this book. Most books on this subject are either obscure, overly detailed, disorganized or confused. The goal of this textbook is to help students and practitioners of Ayurveda to better grasp the functional vision of Ayurveda through a logical, liner presentation of anatomy and physiology. The author of this textbook is a practitioner since 1987 and teaching since 1994. This unique combination allows the author, Vaidya Atreya Smith, to clearly explain the basic principles of Ayurveda. Once these concepts are thoroughly learned the following subjects of pathology, diagnosis and treatments become easy. In this book the Western student of Ayurveda will find a user friendly guide to de-crypt the profound ancient wisdom that is Ayurveda.

Was this book even edited? I paid much more than the $19.XX this book is currently selling for and was quite disappointed. There are a lot of good info-graphics and charts, however reading around the lack of editing has been difficult. Is there a reason this wasn’t edited? And if so, why do books by this author cost so much?I bought this and a second title from this author as textbooks for a class and now refuse to purchase any other titles by this author, as I am leery that they may all be edited this way.

  4. Noris Jimenez

    Four Stars
    Great book

  5. Preet

Very well written, concepts are explained well, without any hyperbole. The clarity with which some esoteric ideas (like the Samkhya philosophy) are elucidated and unfolded for the novice makes this book a must have for a serious student of Ayurveda.

  6. S. Hirsch

what a wonderful and outstanding work on that topic. very useful and clear. the author managed to put the ancient knowledge together with his own observations into absolutely recommendable form using a beautiful sattvic mind!! thank you.

  7. Danny

This publication is an excellent contribution to the field of Ayurvedic knowledge. It is concise, informative and most importantly, practical – a feature often missing from Ayurvedic texts written by non-practitioners. It is a must read by anyone seriously interested in working with Ayurveda, whether for personal development or in a clinical setting.
