Great place to start for an introduction to natural ideas for black hair care
I tried to go natural a year or so ago, but found myself completely overwhelmed by blogs and videos on the internet. Co-wash? Pre-poo? None of these terms were familiar to me, and online guides were disorganized and unclear. This book was such a relief. It introduces these terms and ideas in a short, clear book that can be read in two days; now I am no longer confused when joining in on conversations in black hair care online communities. There are thicker books on black hair care that I hear are good, but I like that this one can literally get you started in 48 hours. What I love about the author’s ideas is that they can be followed in a low-stress way, and she proposes all natural ingredients. I spent maybe only $35 buying all the things I needed and four months later, I still haven’t run out of my materials. I love that everything I use is organic and uncomplicated.A couple of years ago I read a book that encouraged relaxers, straightening irons, and various expensive cremes. It is a strategy many of my friends used and it was a headache, and an ounce of moisture on a drizzly day would ruin all the effort you put into your hair. I was always procrastinating on that regimen because it was so tedious and time-consuming, and of course my hair would get worse because I couldn’t drag myself to spend up to two hours, two days a week on my hair like that book suggested. I was desperate for new advice, and wanted to go natural.Since I started using regimens designed from this book, I have only skipped one week of my usual routine in four months (and that was the week I had exams!). No more procrastination for me because maintaining my hair is no longer a chore. My hair feels like it has grown since I started this regimen, but it is hard to tell because I no longer straighten my hair. It is definitely no worse than what I used to do, and it feels luscious, ethnic, and full.

Superior
This book is superior to any of the books I have ever read on hair. I have made several attempts over the years to go natural and was unsuccessful due to the lack of knowledge as to how to take care of natural hair. This book is not only on taking care of natural hair but due it’s completeness, folks with natural hair will find this book contains just about all that is needed to know. The book is good for newbies as well as those who have been natural for a while. I could not think of anything that the author missed. My main issue with other hair book authors was that there were always vital information that I needed but just was not there in the the book or just barely addressed. However, this author provides complete information as opposed to writing as if the details are secretive. I am trying to think of which chapter I liked best and I cannot because all chapters had clear and very relevant information. The book was such an easy read. The scientific information that she provided when she discussed nutrition and hair care was not overwhelming but very clear and concise. The first chapter was quite entertaining, the second chapter an eye-opener. Ayurveda chapter chapter offered such great information. When you read this book, you can immediately take action and know that you will see results as opposed to finishing the book and sit there wondering where to go from here.

I learned something new
Even if you already have a good amount of knowledge re natural hair care, I think If You Love It, It Will Grow can expand upon that knowledge. And while the Internet does contain plenty of excellent free information, I do like to support those who write the books. Dr Phoenyx has written a well researched book that is both an informative and relatively quick read. The chapters that I enjoyed most were the chapters re hair butters and Ayurvedic treatments. There were a number of butters listed, such as murumuru and a couple of others that I am not even going to attempt to spell 🙂 that I had never heard of and will probably try. For those who like pictures, understand that this is a book about hair care not hair styles, so you will not find any pictures. Read this book for solid information about the proper care and appreciation of your beautiful, God-given hair.

Informative! Just what the doctor ordered!
I wore sister locks for 7 years. I really enjoyed them but was ready for a change. I did the big chop 12/13. I am enjoying my “free flow” journey and I want to know that I’m doing it right. This book helps in explaining how important good nutrition is PERIOD. Plus how to grow healthy natural hair. My hair is thinning in the front top, right along my hair line, on one side! I’m not sure if it’s heredity or from wearing locks. So I’ve been reading up on how to grow/regrow healthy natural hair. This book is one of the best that I’ve found thus far. Dr. Phoenyx is passionate about health and who better to learn from then someone who’s a health expert but also uses them-self as a living testament/example. Great information! Very informative! Valuable information! You’ll learn about the make-up/structure of hair as well as what not to use on it like products containing sulfates and petroleum. Also, which essential oils stimulate hair growth, and which oils penetrate the hair vs. which ones just sit on top of the hair! Thank you for sharing! I highly recommend this book, and not just to newbies of the “natural’ hair family but for anyone who’s making good health a priority! Oh yea, I ordered the vitamins, haven’t received them yet and I’m anxious to get started!

I really liked this book. I love my hair and i know that not everybody has the same relationship, but i do believe that this is important. The book is not condescending, it is full of factual information and very practical.

Just finished reading ‘If you love it, it will grow’ and although it has a lot of information that you may already know it is a great refresher on loving and caring for you hair. It is a great read and I was a little sad when I got to the end. That said chapter 18 has lots of quotes about loving hair ( and yourself) despite the criticism and judgment of others. Thanks Dr Phoenyx 😊
