This book is very helpful on how to care for and style curly hair from a professional hairdresser’s perspective. This book is easy to read and understand. I also love that this book is full of pictures.

I recently decided to stop using perms and let my natural hair grow out. I assumed transitioning would be simple and easy to do. Was I wrong! Now, after reading the book, I have a better understanding of how to properly transition from permed to natural hair, and how to nurture and care for my hair. What’s also great about this book is that I am finally able to understand the meaning of terms that I’ve heard used, such as hair porosity. It also helped with common questions like what types of oils are best to use on your hair, and why. This is a phenomenal book that I highly recommend purchasing.

As a dad to a daughter with naturally curly hair, it is important for me to understand not only how to do her hair, but to help her maintain healthy hair as well! Not Impressive, Just Okay
I got my first big chop in my junior year of college in 2009; back then, natural hair was just becoming popular. The only resources you could find was from natural hair bloggers who were trying to figure it all out as much as the rest of us. Nowadays, there are tons of natural hair care brands and YouTube natural hair personalities who make learning about and taking care of natural hair much easier. Natural hair in general is now more normalized where you see people rocking their natural curls everywhere, and yet, for some reason, there aren’t a whole lot of books dedicated just to natural hair, particularly on Black people.This one is a nice addition to that void, but it’s not as perfect and all-encompassing as it’s trying to sell itself as. It covers the basics very well if you want to do the big chop and know absolutely nothing about natural hair, this would be a great place to start, but for people who’ve been natural for a very long time, you won’t learn anything new. Surprisingly, it doesn’t really go in all that deep for being a 200+ page book. It was VERY repetitive, where throughout the whole book literal paragraphs, even whole chapters, are repeated word-for-word into the next chapter and the next, just with a different title. There were also a few typos and also a chapter where on a list of natural hair friendly oils, grapeseed oil and its description were listed TWICE (how did the editors and proofreaders not catch that??). Also, sometimes the hyper-positive tone of the writing, while I get was used to encourage and empower the possibly vulnerable reader in a pep talk-like fashion, grated on being distracting, a little too corny, and very infantilizing. Just because someone may be new to natural hair doesn’t mean they were born yesterday and don’t know what a comb or brush or what shampoo and conditioner is.I did like what it was trying to do though even when most of what was written could have been said in less words and could have been an article instead. The color pictures were cute, it was nice seeing so many gorgeous Black faces and natural hair types of many textures. They were honest about having paid sponsored products, but they didn’t push and oversell those products too much. I also thought it was cute that they had a section for kids/parents, and the tips near the end from hair care professionals was a nice touch even though they only regurgitated everything that the book already said. It would have been nice if it had a chapter focusing on older naturals with gray hair and pictures of older people wearing their natural hair, I mean, it’s not as if only people in their 20’s and 30’s and kids rock their natural hair you know!This book’s not perfect, but it’s overall a good natural hair care book, for beginners only. If you want more detailed and specific information, better time is spent on finding that on the Internet or on YouTube.

I got a couple of these as gifts for friends who are natural but need a little guidance on their hair journey. Both have mentioned there love for the book and that it lays out your wash routine, tools, hair type etc.
